Course Objectives

This course fosters the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to start a new venture. The student is required to assess his or her own entrepreneurial orientation and commitment and to formulate a realistic business plan for a new venture or an existing business. Topic areas include trends in entrepreneurship, forms of ownership, advertising, financial statements, location analysis, legal environment, and other issues.

GRADING:

Midterm Exam:   10 points
Final Exam:   10 points
Chapter Reviews:   20 points
Attendance and Participation:   20 points
Business Plan:   40 points
TOTAL   100 points

Final grades will be determined by the following scale:

A: 90% or above B: 80%-90% C: 70%-80% D: 60%-70%

There may be some opportunities to earn extra credit points.

REQUIREMENTS

MIDTERM EXAM

The midterm-n exam may cover any of the material taken from the texts or anything we have done in the class up to the date of the exam.

FINAL EXAM

The final exam may cover any of the material taken from the texts or anything we have done in the class since the date the midterm was given out. Note: Any student may substitute a score based on voluntary participation in the student organization, "Students In Free Enterprise" (SIFE) for the score they receive on the final exam.

CHAPTER REVIEWS

Each student will be responsible for reviewing at least two of the chapters from, "The E Myth". In conducting a review, the student will be responsible for providing a 2-page summary of the content of the chapter for each member of the class at the time the chapter is to be discussed. The student is also to lead discussion (15-25 minutes) on that particular chapter.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:

Your attendance and participation score will be based on your attendance (-1 per absence, -.5 per late/leave)and participation in class, writing(2 pages) and presenting(5-8 minutes) a brief biography on an entrepreneurs points) and any additional assignments conducted in conjunction with the class.

BUSINESS PLAN:

Each student, or team of two students, will be responsible for creating a business plan for an individual or firm. Contacts for the business plan can be made through the Senior Core of Retired Executives (SCORE) 861-9249 or Small Business Development Center 322-5881. Ted Thiesen, the president of the local chapter of SCORE, will come to class on Tuesday, the 13th of January, to explain what SCORE does and how you can assist with a client. You will work with your client to develop their idea for a business and, through the model presented in BizPlan Express, develop the entire business plan for them. You will provide a copy of your report to your client and another to me. In addition, you will be asked to make a presentation of your plan to the class (and your client, should they choose to attend)(approx 20 min).

-All work must be typed and double-spaced with normal margins and fonts unless otherwise specified.
