English 5030:
Pedagogical Grammar
The Responsibilities of Students in Online and Hybrid
Versions of English 5030
Contract
- Students must agree to
the contract to continue in the class. The contract is the first file in
“Course Content.” Students will see the remainder of the class
only after they have agreed to the contract.
Participation and Collaboration
- Students must complete
the orientation and pretest for the class. All instructions are found in
the syllabus of the class.
- Students must post
questions about the content of the class in the appropriate folder under
“Discussion Topics” so that other students can see both the question and
the answers. Students may send private comments to the instructor and
other students using the message function in Blackboard.
- Students must follow the
rules of netiquette in all postings for the class; that is, students must
write in Edited American English, which means using appropriate grammar,
spelling, diction, and punctuation. Following the rules of
netiquette also means that students avoid provocative forms of expression
such as profanity, sarcasm, and ridicule.
- Students need to
complete the exercises in the exercise book and the exercises online to
successfully learn the material of the class and to prepare themselves for
the examinations. Students who do not obtain a score of 75% correct
responses for a module will not have access to the examination for that
module.
- Students must work
methodically through the class and adhere to all deadlines.
- If the students are
enrolled in a hybrid section of English 3620, I highly recommend that they
attend the lectures for the class.
- Students may use the
chat function in Blackboard in complete privacy. I never enter the chat
function. Nevertheless, I expect all students to conform to the
rules of netiquette stipulated above.
- All students must enroll
themselves in a Discussion Group, which will have the responsibility to
answer and submit answers to five short essay prompts. Students must
submit the answers to the prompts given to the Discussion Groups by the
due date. All students in the Discussion Group receive the same grade. The
total points awarded for the answers to the questions assigned to the
Discussion Groups constitute 10% of the final grade.
Examinations
- Students must take all
examinations on the given dates and within the times provided. The times
are a window in which students must take the exams; however, most students
need an hour or less to take each of the six content examinations.
Students usually need a little more time to take the final examination.
- If for some serious
reason, students cannot take an examination on the stipulated date, they
must contact the instructor before the exam is released.
- Students must earn an
average score of at least 75% correct responses on the online exercises of
a module to gain access to the examination for that module.
- On the days of
examinations, students may use books and notes. However, students should
realize that all sub-sections of the examinations are timed, meaning that
students will not have much time to search for answers.
- During the hours of
examinations, students lose access to all exercises and lectures in the
class, meaning that they need to finish studying before the release of the
examination.
