David A. Melendez is Assistant Professor of Theatre History and Literature in the Music and Theatre Department at CSUB. He is completing his Ph.D in Theatre Historiography from the University of Minnesota, where he studied representations of the California Mission past in literature, theatre, and performance. He has taught classes in Theatre and in Chicano and Latino Studies, was a graduate writing consultant at the UMN Center for Writing, and was research assistant in the early stages of the creation of the digital portal, Mexican American Art Since 1848 (MAAS1848). In Minneapolis, he worked with Penumbra Theatre, Mixed Blood Theatre, the Guthrie Theater, the Alliance of Latinx Minnesota Artists (ALMA), and played son jarocho with the MN Jaraneros. Recent projects include the devised play, Denim, UMN-Theatre Novi Most co-production (dramaturg, 2018), the performance project Ploys for Ensemble Glitz and Crisis Actors, Toot (performer, 2018-2019), the play Little Boy: A Nuclear Telenovela, The Brecht Circle (producer, 2019), the short film Men Among Men (actor, 2019), and publishing research in the Polish Theatre journal, Pamietnik Teatralny (2021). David is a US Navy veteran (submarines) and is excited to be back home in Kern county, where he graduated from Rosamond High School.
