Exercise 1:  Use the descriptions in your lab manual or pictures on the wall to fill in the following microscope structures labeled: Ocular lens, Objectives (4x, 10x, 40x – do no include 100X oil immersion lens), condenser lens, iris diaphragm, stage, stage clips, coarse adjustment knob and fine adjustment knob.

Exercise 2: Answer the following questions while following the procedure using the letter e slide

2.         a. Is the image in the ocular inverted relative to the specimen on the stage?

                b.  Is the distance between the specimen and the objective lens greater using the 40X or 10X             objective?

3.  Compute the total magnification of the specimen being viewed.

            a.  total magnification with the 40X objective ______________

                b.  total magnification if the ocular is 20X and the objective is 100X (the oil immersion lens)                                                                                ________________________________

and the three color threads slide.

5.   a.  Does the 4X or the 10X objective have a shorter depth of field?

     b.  fill out table 1.

Table 2-  Differences between human epithelial and elodea cells.  List how the animal cells differ from the plant cells. (you should have at least two differences for each)
