Formation of Sperm

1.  Be able to identify a cross section of the testis (do not mistake the ovary for the testis....in a cross section there are no other organs present to use as a landmark). Be able to identify the seminiferous tubules, developing spermatozoa and flagella.

Formation of Ovum

  1.  Be able to identify a cross section of the ovary (same hint as with the testis....be sure to look at a slide since a cross section will not have other organs as landmarks). Identify:  primary follicles, secondary follicle (Graafian follicle); within the follicle be able to identify the mature oocyte, liquid in the follicle (antrum)....know a follicle cell from other cells in the ovary.

Embryo at 3 weeks to 4 weeks: 

identify the rudimentary head, developing heart, and tail region, yolk sac, amniotic cavity, future umbilical cord and villi of placenta.
