English 3440: International Folk Literature
The Responsibilities of Students in Online and Hybrid
Sections of English 3440
Pretest
- All students must
complete the pretest by midnight on the first Sunday after classes
begin. The score on the pretest is
not calculated into the students final grades. However, it is still a requirement
because the instructor uses that score and the one from the final
examination to calculate student gains during the semester. Students who do not take the pretest
will be removed from the class.
Participation and Collaboration
- Students must view the
navigation video in Bb and read the syllabus carefully
- Students must write an
introduction of themselves in the Discussion Board in Bb.
- Students must write six
blog entries of at least 400 words each and respond to the entry of
another student in at least 100 words.
- Students must follow the
rules of netiquette in all postings for the class; that is, students must
write in Edited American English, which means using appropriate grammar,
spelling, diction, and punctuation. Following the rules of
netiquette also means that students avoid provocative forms of expression
such as profanity, sarcasm, and ridicule.
- Students must work methodically
through the class and adhere to all deadlines.
- Students may use the
chat function in Blackboard in complete privacy. I never enter the chat
function. Nevertheless, I expect all students to conform to the
rules of netiquette stipulated above.
- All students must enroll
themselves in a Discussion Group so that they collaboratively compose an
original urban legend.
- Students must vote on
the best urban legend.
Quizzes and Final Examination
- Students must take all
quizzes and the final examination on the given dates and within the times
provided. The instructor provides a window of 18 hours; however, most
students need less than half an hour to take each of the six quizzes.
Students usually need a little more time to take the final examination.
- If for some serious
reason, students cannot take a quiz on the stipulated date, they must
contact the instructor before the quiz is released.
- Students may take the
quizzes and the final examination at any site.
- Students may take
quizzes two times, and only the highest score will be recorded.
- On the days of the
quizzes and final examination, students may use books and notes. However,
students should realize that all sub-sections of the final examination are
timed, meaning that students will not have much time to search for
answers.
- The dates and times of
all quizzes and the final examination are in the calendar in Bb. Students are responsible for knowing and
adhering to those dates.
