English 4648 Online: Sociolinguistics
Policies and the Responsibilities of Students in the Online
Version of English 4648
Participation and Collaboration
- Students must read the syllabus and complete the
pretest for the class.
- Students may compose group term papers as long as the
number of writers does not exceed three.
- Students must post an introduction of themselves in the
Introduction Folder in "Discussion Topics".
- Students must follow the rules of netiquette in all
postings for the class; that is, students must write in Edited American
English, which means using appropriate grammar, spelling, diction, and
punctuation. Following the rules of netiquette also means that students
avoid provocative forms of expression such as profanity, sarcasm, and
ridicule.
- Students must post questions about the content of the
class in the appropriate folders under “Discussion Topics” so that other
students can see both the question and the answers. Students may send
private comments to the instructor and other students using the email
function in Canvas.
- Students need to complete the online exercises to
successfully learn the material of the class and to prepare themselves for
the examinations.
- Students must post a comment to a student response on
the blog associated with the movie "American Tongues". The
instructor will assign grades for this task within 48 after the due date
and time
- Students must submit the bibliography for their term
paper in APA and revise it if necessary. The instructor will assign grades
for this task within 48 hours after the due date and time.
- Students must work methodically through the class and
adhere to all deadlines.
- Students may use the chat function in Canvas in
complete privacy. The instructor never enters the chat function.
- Students must submit responses to five of the 14 module
questions. All late responses will
receive a score of 60.
- All responses to the 14 module questions must be at
least 300 words loing.
Final Examination
- Students must take the final examination on the given
date and within the times provided. The times are a window in which
students must take the exams; however, most students need less than 1.5
hours to take the final examination.
- If for some serious reason, students cannot take the
final examination on the stipulated date, they must contact the instructor
before the exam is released.
- Students may take the final exam at any site.
- Students may use books or notes during the examination.
However, the sections of the exam are strictly timed, so students will not
have much time to look up answers.
- During the hours of the final examination, students
lose access to all other materials in the class, meaning that they need to
finish studying before the release of the examination.
Academic Integrity
Policy on Grades of Incomplete
- Because this is an online class and goes down on the
day after the final examination, students may not receive a grade of
incomplete. Students who cannot finish the class need to request to drop.
