Course
Objective 1: Students will demonstrate
knowledge of how morphemes systematically combine to form words and how to
distinguish word classes from one another using morphological and syntactic
information.
Upon completing Part 1: General Morphology and Word Classes, students will be able to:
Course
Objective 2: Students will demonstrate
knowledge of the structure and systematic nature of phrases and sentences and
how to discriminate among them.
Upon completing Part 2: Phrases and Sentence Patterns, students will be able to:
Course
Objective 3: Students will demonstrate an ability to systematically identify,
describe, and categorize the constituents of sentences and their grammatical
functions, thus empowering them to conduct independent linguistic analysis.
Upon completing Part 3: Beyond Form: Testing for Grammatical Function, the students will be able to:
Course
Objective 4: Students will demonstrate
knowledge of the structure and function of finite and non-finite clauses and
how to discriminate among them.
Upon completing Part 4: Finite and Non-finite Structures, students will be able to:
Course
Objective 5: Students will be able to
explain how to teach selected morphological and syntactic structures to
students.
Upon
completing each part of the class, students will be able to:
· Explain how to use the plural morpheme to identify count nouns. (Module 1)
· Explain how to use pairs of determiners such as less and fewer and much and many to distinguish between count and non-count nouns. (Module 2)
· Explain how to find the grammatical subject in different types of sentences. (Module 3)
·
Explain the difference between a DO and IO and
how to test for them. (Module 4)
·
Explain how the three manipulations of
substitution, deletion, and movement can be used in conjunction to identify the
grammatical functions of different syntactic structures. (Module 5)
Each
of the student learning outcomes listed above will be associated with its
appropriate module in the course. Students have the opportunity to fulfill the
student learning objectives by completing the exercises for each module.
Students will then demonstrate their level of knowledge of the learning
objectives by taking the examination for the module. The content and form of
the examinations are directly related to the exercises, so students must
complete the exercises if they expect to do well on the examination.
