All About the Department of English
Welcome to the Department of English at California State University, Bakersfield!
What can you do with an English major? It’s a common question with a simple answer: Live a productive, creative, and fulfilling life. You will learn skills valued everywhere, across hundreds of possible careers and industries. Some of these professional paths exist now, some will emerge in the future. You may even be among those who create new ways to live and work. Our graduates become teachers, lawyers, and professors, as well as writers, editors, and publishers. They go on to work in education, business, and government, as well as in countless other fulfilling professions. Of course, they begin here — studying the English language and some of the greatest works of literature ever written.
Our programs – led by 19 full-time faculty with specializations in American Literature, British Literature, Ethnic and World Literature, African American Literature, Latinx Literature, Composition & Rhetoric, Creative Writing, English Education, and Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition – offer a range of courses that provide both depth and breadth.
The Department offers two Bachelor of Arts in English degrees and the Master of Arts in English. The English Major with Credential Emphasis (EMCE), the preferred option for those who wish to become high school English Language Arts teachers, is a state-approved program that permits immediate entry into the Single Subject Credential Program by satisfying the required subject-matter competency in English.
The English Major in Language and Literature (EMLL) provides a comprehensive and humanistic approach to the study of the English language, exposing students to a wide range of authors, genres, literary periods, and literary traditions, including British, American, Ethnic, and World literature, as well as to creative writing and linguistics.
The Master of Ars in English provides a well-balanced program offering course coverage in literature, including British, American, and Ethnic literatures, linguistics, and composition, as well as intense training in reading, critical analysis, research, and writing, The MA also qualifies our graduates to teach in the California community college system and prepares them for careers in editing, advertising, and public information.
The Department also offers three minors, including the minor in English literature, the minor in linguistics, and the minor in children’s literature, as well as two post-baccalaureate certificate programs, the certificate in writing and the certificate in children’s literature.
The Department also oversees a robust Writing Program which offers writing courses across the curriculum taught by highly skilled instructors. The Writing Program, working in conjunction with the MA program, also offers the Teaching Assistant Program in Writing, an apprenticeship program that offers successful students that possibility of teaching his or her own composition class for up to three semesters.
The Department also provides students with a number of activities in which they can participate in and collaborate on, including our two student-edited and student-produced publications, Orpheus and Calliope, two clubs and honor societies, English Club and Sigma Tau Delta, two honors and awards, The Sigma Tau Delta Writing Awards and The Li’i Pearl Outstanding Student in English Award, and two every-semester events, The California Writers Series (CWS) and The Lectures in Language and Linguistics (L3).
