Teacher Residencies
Teacher Residencies is a co-teaching model that blends classroom mentorships with academic coursework. Teacher residents learn how to teach by working alongside a master teacher in the school district where they will eventually work.
Steps to Apply for a Teacher Residency
- Attend an Information Session
- Apply to CSU Bakersfield
- Enroll in the foundation courses
TRRE Residency starts with the foundation stage, please contact the Residency Coordinator for more information. - Apply to the appropriate credential program and apply to the residency of your choice
- Interview with the credential program
- 2nd interview with the residency team
- Applicants will be notified of the program(s)' decision

Black Educator Teacher Residency - Various Districts
The Black Educator Teacher Residency (BETR) is a virtual teacher residency for grades TK-9. CSU Bakersfield in partnership with districts across California are dedicated to recruiting and retaining diverse individuals with an emphasis on Afrocentric cultural competency. BETR strives to connect with the partner district’s community and to make a significant impact on preparing our students socially, emotionally, and academically for the 21st century.

Kern Teacher Residency - Greenfield Unified School District
The Kern Teacher Residency is a year-long teacher preparation program (January - December) dedicated to the support and training of teacher candidates (Residents). In partnership with CSU Bakersfield, Residents have the opportunity to complete their credential coursework and clinical practice all within the Greenfield Union School District. Our classes are co-taught by faculty from both CSU Bakersfield and Greenfield, making the content relevant to what is occurring in the classrooms that the residents are placed in.

Greenfield Teacher Residency for Education Specialists
Greenfield Residency for Educational Specialists, is an alternative pathway for students seeking a preliminary teaching credential in Special Education for either Mild/Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) or Extensive Support Needs (ESN). Residency programs provide teacher candidates with the best training to become a teacher and give residents a network of mentors and staff who are dedicated to their support. Mentor teachers are selected from highly qualified teachers who are vetted by both CSU, Bakersfield and Greenfield Union School District. Careful consideration is given to mentor and resident matches to ensure that their personalities work well together. The GREAT Residency is a year-long program based on an academic year. The program runs for an entire school year beginning in August and ending in June.

Bakersfield City School District Teacher Residency
The Education Specialist Teacher Residency-Bakersfield (ESTR-B) seeks excellent elementary and junior high teachers who will serve as a mentor for participating residents. The Education Specialist Teacher Residency-Bakersfield is a teacher preparation program for graduate students seeking to earn their Education Specialist Credential in either Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) or Extensive Support Needs (ESN). ESTR-B is a unique residency program that consists of a partnership between California State University, Bakersfield and the Bakersfield City School District. Upon proficient completion of the residency, the highly trained residents will become teachers within the Bakersfield City School District serving some of the highest need students in the district through special education programs.
