Elder College
Elder College is an annual multi-day course that aims to educate and entertain on a given topic through classes, field trips and social time.
History of Elder College
In 1990, the 60+ Club formed an Elderhostel Committee coordinated by Harvey and Laura Brockmeyer. Thirty-two people came and lived in the dorms for a week in August, going on field trips, taking classes, and being wined-and-dined. In 1992, the committee made the decision to use a hotel for more flexible timing and greater comfort for the participants.
In 1995, the name was changed to Elder College. With this change, the instruction and field trips stayed the same, but the participants stayed at home and came to campus. The price per enrollee dropped from $345 to $95, which included five days of instruction, five lunches, one all-day field trip, and one final dinner.
In 2000, Elder College became a three-day course of 1 1/2-half hour daily sessions, lunch in the dining commons, and an all-day field trip and a special last night dinner. This was a successful formula as can be seen in the "History of the Elder College," which contains all of the Elder College classes from 1990-2016.
"Elder College provides a lot of fun and learning experiences. Elder College began as an Elder Hostel and was directed by Laura and Harvey Brockmeyer. After three sessions, a decision was made to transform it into a week-long Elder College sponsored by CSUB. Each morning there are two sessions and in the afternoon, one session. Lunch is served at the Commons except for one catered lunch in the Dezember Center. We invite you to attend this year. The more people, the more successful Elder College is and will continue for more years. I loved each year's program and know you also will."
