Session Traveling & Weather
The main logistics for this summer program includes a residency experience at CSU Bakersfield and its university hotel affiliates. Chartered bus services will be provided for participants to and from the campus to historical landmark locations located within a 45-60 minute radius from the campus center. On Monday through Thursday, teacher participants and the project team will gather each day in the morning to take a chartered bus to Allensworth State Park, Sunset Labor Camp, various sites in Delano, and the National Chavez Center. The onsite activity will occur in the morning, followed by afternoon seminar style activities with the project directors and visiting scholars. Given that the San Joaquin Valley can reach temperature over 100 degrees during the summer months, on site travel will occur in the morning when temperatures are moderate. Afternoon activity will generally occur indoors. While onsite outdoors, participants are recommended to wear light clothing, closed shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Water and fruit will be provided onsite.
Session Selection & Lodging Options
Teacher participants will have a choice between Session A (June 19-24, 2023; M-F) and Session B (July 10-14, 2023; M-F). All participants will be required to arrive no later than Sunday for a late afternoon orientation program prior to each session. During session A, teacher participants will have the option to lodge on campus in the CSUB Dormitories. Session B participants will only have the option of staying in nearby university hotel affiliates, or to make their own arrangements for residency using AirBnB, etc. University rates for nearby hotels will apply. During session A, dorm residents will have the option of selecting breakfast catering. Lunch will be provided onsite at all rural landmark locations. Participants will be on their own for dinner options. A list of nearby dining options can be found below. Please note that the teacher participants will be expected to follow all university Covid 19 policies. For the most recent updates, please see the university covid 19 page.
Stipends
All teacher participants will be issued $1,300 stipends to assist in covering lodging, travel, and food costs. Please note stipends are taxable income.
