About NSME Career Pathways
Our Commitment to Diversity and Equity
California State University, Bakersfield is considered a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with 63% of our student population identifying as Hispanic. Being the only four-year higher education institution within a 100-mile radius, CSUB has made it a priority to serve students from Kern, Tulare, and Inyo Counties with a new research-based HSI model known as ‘servingness.’ It is noted that CSUB is underserving Hispanic students by way of accessibility to impactful opportunities. With the servingness model in mind, the cultural assets of Hispanic students are highlighted and emphasized in hopes of increasing academic and professional success.
Equity Initiatives: Title III Federal Grant
Through our Title III Federal Grant awarded by the Department of Education, CSUB has adopted objectives that address the structural gaps in equity. Our project, An Equitable Pathway to In-Demand STEM Careers, focuses on serving Hispanic and low-income students in our area(s) who are interested in pursuing degrees within Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (STEM). Our propositions include – but are not limited to – developing equitable access to STEM pathways and careers, bilingual family workshops, transfer outreach and acceptance guarantees, access to Peer Learning Coaches, and a STEM speakers’ series formally known as STEMxTALK.
CSUB HIS-STEM: Advancing in STEM Accessibility
Through undergraduate research, STEM internships, career exploration opportunities, and professional industry related events, CSUB HIS-STEM’s purpose is to close accessibility gaps in STEM fields and increase degree completion and career outcomes.
