Considering attending summer school? Please be aware of the following regarding financial aid awarding and eligibility for summer school:
At CSUB, the summer term is treated (for financial aid purposes) as the last term in an academic year. Summer session will be offered through the Main Campus.
Eligibility Requirements
Students interested in receiving aid for the summer term must:
- Have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file for the corresponding academic year;
- Submit all required financial aid documents;
- For student loan eligibility, be enrolled at least half-time and have remaining eligibility
available:
- Undergraduates & Teacher Credential Students: 6 credit hours
- Master's & Doctorate Students (enrolled in 500 level coursework or higher): 3 credit hours;
- For year-round Pell eligibility, undergraduates would need to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours;
- Summer has 3 distinct sessions: a 10-week session and two 5-week sessions. Your enrollment for financial aid eligibility is the total of your enrollment in all those sessions combined.
Awarding
Eligibility for Pell Grants and Subsidized/Unsubsidized loans will be automatically determined and awarded by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships for students who meet all the outlined eligibility requirements. However, Parent PLUS/Grad PLUS loans and Private Alternative loans must be requested by the student. Initial awards are offered at full-time status and will be adjusted to actual enrollment at the time of disbursement.
Pell Grant Eligibility
Students may qualify for an additional 50% Pell award (Year-round Pell) in summer even if they received 100% Pell award in fall and spring semesters. Students would need to be enrolled in 12 units to receive the full 50% Pell award and in a minimum of 6 units to receive a partial award. Students who did not use all their 100% Pell eligibility in fall and spring semesters, may be eligible for a less than half-time award.
Loan Eligibility
Students are limited to the amount of federal student loans they can borrow within an academic year based on their Cost of Attendance and annual loan limits by grade level. Eligibility for Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans, will be automatically determined and awarded by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships for students who meet all the outlined eligibility requirements. If a student has already borrowed their maximum federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized student loans for the academic year, their summer aid eligibility may be limited to borrowing a Parent PLUS loan, a Grad PLUS loan, or an Alternative Student Loan. Please consult with one of our Financial Aid Advisors if you are interested in a Parent PLUS, a Grad PLUS, or Alternative Student loan.
Changes to Your Eligibility
Changes in enrolled credit hours, including course cancellation or withdrawal from summer classes, may result in changes to your aid. You may lose eligibility for aid you've already received, requiring you to return funds to the University. Please refer to our Census Day Repackaging policy for more information.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Students with a SAP Warning, an Academic Plan or are nearing SAP limits will have their summer disbursement held until spring grades are submitted and SAP can be verified.
