Spanish Placement Test
The Spanish Placement Test’s sole purpose is to determine proper course level placement, to ensure you get the most out of your academic experience. All students enrolling for the first time in a CSUB Spanish course must take a placement test to determine which course would be appropriate for them. Students may not self-place into language courses and must enroll according to their placement results. The only exception is for students entering with course credit (transfer credit or AP exam). In the case of AP credit, the student's score on the exam will determine course placement:
AP Score | Credit Granted | Course to Enroll |
---|---|---|
3 | SPAN 1000 & 1010 | SPAN 2000 or SPAN 2020 (for Heritage Speakers) |
4 | SPAN 1010 & 2000 or SPAN 2000 & 2020 (for Heritage Speakers) | SPAN 2010 or SPAN 2030 (for Heritage Speakers) |
5 | SPAN 2000 & 2010 or SPAN 2020 & 2030 (for Heritage Speakers) | SPAN 3000 |
*Note: Courses may not be taught every semester. Check the most current list of projected course offerings.
Bonus Credits!
Bonus credits (up to 6 additional "back" units) may be awarded if placement testing demonstrates the student to be at least at the Spanish 1010 level. Interested students simply need to take the placement exam, enroll in the course placed into (Spanish 1010 or higher), and earn a grade of C or above in said course.
For example, if a student places into and successfully completes Spanish 1010, credit for both Spanish 1000 and 1010 will be awarded. Likewise, if a student places into and completes Spanish 2000, credit for Spanish 1000, 1010, and 2000 will be awarded.
These back credits also apply to those who place into the fluent speaker track (Spanish 2020 and 2030) or at the 3000 level. For example, if a student places into and successfully completes Spanish 2030, credit would be then awarded for Spanish 1000, 1010, 2020 and 2030.
