Matt Hanne
Matthew Hanne is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at California State University - Bakersfield, where he teaches courses related to elementary music and voice, and serves as the University Supervisor for intern schools in the local school districts. He previously served as the Director of Fine Arts at The Independent School in Wichita, KS, where in fifteen years he taught 1st-12th graders in Classroom Music, Choir, Music Theory, Introduction to Psychology, and AP Psychology. Concurrently with this position, Matthew served on the faculty of Newman University, where he was an adjunct instructor of Applied Voice, Heritage of Western Music, and Music Theory.
Matthew earned his Kodály Certification from Wichita State University, studying with Jo Kirk, Lisa Simmelink, Susan Tevis and Gabor Virágh. He has also studied at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemét during multiple summer sessions. At the 2017 International Kodály Seminar in Kecskemét, Hungary, he participated in a conducting master class with Péter Erdei, and was selected by Mr. Erdei to be one of the conductors for the final concert, conducting the New Liszt Ferenc Chamber Choir in Kodály's "Fölszállott a páva". Matthew has consistently been placed in the highest level of solfege class offered during each summer session, studying with Marianna Spiegel, Judit Varga and Nóra Keresztes. Matthew recently served as the English Language Translator for "Classical Harmony", a translation from a Hungarian textbook co-authored by Ms. Keresztes.
Matthew has been privileged to teach in several different OAKE Summer Courses, starting as a one year substitute at Morehead State University (Solfege). He has also taught at the University of Central Missouri (Solfege), Wichita State University (Conducting, Level III Pedagogy and Folk Song Research, and Level I and II - Secondary Track Pedagogy and Song Research), and California State University - Bakersfield (solfege).
Matthew has presented at local, state, regional, and national conferences on topics related to choral rehearsal techniques, vocal improvisation, and the Kodály approach to teaching. In 2015, he presented on Kodály concepts applied to secondary music classrooms at the national conference for the National Association for Music Education. For the Organization of American Kodály Music Educators, he has presented three sessions at the national conference ("Inspiring Improvisation", "This Choir is Our Choir" and "Whispers from the Past", and headlined the Midwest Kodály Music Educators Association regional conference, leading a session on kinesthetic additions to the choral rehearsal. Matthew has presented at the Kansas Music Educators Association state conference, and the Kansas Choral Directors Association summer convention. He is pleased to have led workshops with the Kodály Music Educators of Kansas, the Oklahoma Kodály Educators, and the Kodály Music Educators of Central California, as well as for school districts in Kansas, Missouri, and California. Matthew has directed elementary honor choirs for the South Central and South West Kansas Music Educators regional groups, as well as the Hutchinson, KS school district. In February of 2023, Matthew will present at the California All-State Music Educators Conference, and he was selected to present at the 26th International Kodály Symposium in Summer of 2023.
Matthew is currently serving as the Secondary Choral Chair for the OAKE National Board, and has previously served as president of the Kodály Music Educators of Kansas, and High School Choir Chair for the South Central Kansas Music Educators Association.
