Leadership Through Service
One of the core values of our organization is Leadership through service. Phi Sigma Sigma believes that a woman her serves is a woman who leads. By being actively involved with our campus, community and such amazing organizations we are able to not only better the world we live in, but to also better ourselves by becoming stronger women.

As an organization we participate in several philanthropic events a month throughout the school year. Our ladies will also volunteer in the community on their own during the summer and on school breaks. A large number of our chapters philanthropic and service endeavors take place outside of the campus community. We have participated in events even outside of Kern County, traveling to Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles to help play our part!

A few of the organizations we continue to volunteer for/support include:

  • Adopt A Soldier
  • American Cancer Society
  • CASA
  • Girl Scouts
  • Graffiti Clean up with Bakersfield Police Department
  • Habitat For Humanity
  • Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
  • Jameson Center
  • Kern County Fire Department
  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (Sacramento)
  • Mother's Against Drunk Driving
  • National Kidney Foundation
  • Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation

We Love To Rock!
Our largest events of the year, and possibly the one we are best known for, is Rock-A-Thon. We hold this annual event to raise money for our international philanthropy: The Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation. The Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation was created in 1969 and serves as our organization's outlet for philanthropic and educational endeavors. In 1971 the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation selected The National Kidney Foundation as its prime venture. The NKF was chosen because at that time kidney disease was the number one killer of women. Through the support of over 130 Phi Sigma Sigma collegiate chapters throughout the United States and Canada, the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation has been able to create a 1-800 number for NKF to help family members of those with kidney disease. In addition they've funded the creation of videos, pamphlets, books, camps and so much more! In 2006 the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation was honored to be a Bronze Sponsor for the National Kidney Foundation's Transplant Games, donating over $30,000 to the cause. In addition to supporting NKF, the Foundation also grants annual scholarships to college women throughout the United States and Canada to assist them in their continued education.

Our local Rock-A-Thon raises money for the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation through sponsorships from local businesses, a large raffle giveaway, and contributions from local campus and community members. We begin work on the event a year in advance and it truly pays off. In 2007 we raised over $5,400 for Foundation! This is one of our most amazing events because it is so rewarding to see the hard work and effort come together as members of the Greek community on campus, members of various sports teams and organizations, students, faculty and staff all come out and show their support!
