Humanities Lab Event
We had a great Spring 2023 meeting of the Humanities Lab in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Bakersfield (March 16, 2023). The Humanities Lab serves as a venue for sharing research, methods, and resources to promote scholarly engagement within the College of Arts and Humanities (and beyond) among faculty, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates at CSUB.
For this meeting, Dr. Steve Frye of the CSUB English Department gave a fascinating
talk on "An Unknown Tongue: God, Complexity, and the Limits of Secular Epistemology
in Cormac McCarthy's The Passenger and Stella Maris.” The talk was followed by comments
by an interdisciplinary panel composed of Dr. Fran Fairbairn (Philosophy), Dr. Javier
Trigos-Arrieta (Mathematics), and Dr. Jon Young (Religious Studies). The comments
of the panel, which was ably moderated by Dr. Steve Gamboa (Interim Associate Dean),
were wide-ranging and thought-provoking.
The audience of faculty and students then engaged in intriguing discussion and questions
with Dr. Frye and the panelists about McCarthy’s works. It was a true intellectual
feast.

Past Accolades
Faculty Awards
The College of Arts and Humanities held their 2022 Honors Convocation on May 11, 2022, in the Walter Stiern Library, Dezember Reading Room with opening remarks from CSUB President Lynnette Zelezny and a keynote address by CSUB History alumnus Jamal Wright.
As CSUB states, "By recognizing the achievements of our distinguished faculty in areas of professional achievement, service, and teaching, we celebrate the climate of excellence that we create together." Congratulations to all faculty who've received such high recognition for their profound work!
The Runner Awards
In early March, the staff of The Runner student news organization at CSUB brought home 12 awards from their trip to Long Beach, including recognitions at the state and national levels for college journalism.
The six student staff members traveled to California for the Associated Collegiate Press Spring National College Media Conference, where they attended workshops and met with industry professionals for skills building and career development. As part of the conference, they won national recognition in the Best of Show competition for the website The Runner Online and for the magazine Converge.
Also at the conference, The Runner received 10 statewide honors in the California College Media Association’s annual student journalism contest. Despite the challenges of operating virtually, The Runner was honored with two first places for design - cover page and overall design.
“Even though the newspaper hasn’t printed an issue in two years, the students still strive to create the best publication possible every two weeks,” said Jennifer Burger, faculty adviser to The Runner and a lecturer in the Department of Communications at CSUB. Also notable are the awards received for social justice coverage and sexual assault awareness – two issues the student staff focused on in 2021 while also covering the impacts of COVID-19 at CSUB and in the community.
History Department Spotlight
The History department welcomed students at a meet-and-greet at the Bakersfield campus on Wednesday. "With a cornucopia of snacks, we greeted majors, chatted about their classes, and answered questions about our three-degree programs. It’s good to be back," writes Dr. Miriam Vivian.
