Minors
Requirements for the Minor in English Literature
The minimum requirements for a minor in English Literature are:
Four (4) courses in English literature totaling 12 semester units, at the 2000 level or above, at least three of which must be upper division. Courses that satisfy the GWAR, or courses in Linguistics or Children's Literature, do not count towards the minor in English literature.
Requirements for the Minor in Linguistics
The minor in Linguistics is especially useful for elementary and secondary teachers and for those interested in ESL instruction. It consists of four (4) three-unit courses: ENGL 3610 - General Linguistics and three additional upper-division linguistics courses from the following:
- ENGL 3640 - Methods and Materials in Teaching Second Language Writing
- ENGL 3650 - Theories of Language Acquisition
- ENGL 4600 - Morphology
- ENGL 4610 - Phonology
- ENGL 4620 - Syntax
- ENGL 4630 - Semantics and Pragmatics
- ENGL 4648 - Sociolinguistics
- ENGL 4650 - History of the Language
- ENGL 4660 - Historical Linguistics
Requirements for the Minor in Children's Literature
The minor in Children's Literature indicates the completion of specialized study in children's and young adult literature. The following four (4) courses totaling 12 semester units are required:
- ENGL 4410 -Studies in 19th Century Children's Literature
- ENGL 4420 - Studies in 20th Century Children's Literature
- ENGL 4430 - The Young Adult Novel
- ENGL 4440 - Children's Literature and International Myth, Folk Tale, and Film
Certificates
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Writing certifies the completion of specialized training in writing by those who hold a BA degree or an MA degree, whether or not they are involved in a graduate degree program. Candidates for this certificate must complete with a "B-" or better three (3) specific writing courses:
- ENGL 5110 - Approaches to the Analysis of Writing
- ENGL 5120 - Rhetorical Theory
- ENGL 5130 - Composition Theory & Practice
And one (1) course chosen from the following:
- ENGL 5140 - Methods and Materials in Teaching Second Language Writing
- ENGL 5150 - Teaching Basic Writers
