Protection of Animal Subjects
All proposed uses of animals in teaching and research at CSUB must be submitted to the IACUC for review. The "Health Research Extension Act of 1985" specifies that these activities may not begin until they have been authorized by the university IACUC. "Animals" are defined as live vertebrates in terms of these protections.
The principal investigator on every IACUC protocol, as well as others having substantial contact with the animals must be certified as having appropriate training in the Animal Care & Use training. Training materials for this purpose are available online CITI Animal Care & Use Training.
Proposed use of animals for either teaching or research are submitted to the IACUC in a specific IACUC protocol format and reviewed by the IACUC at quarterly meetings in September, November, February, and May IACUC Meeting Dates. Submission deadlines are announced to CSUB faculty and generally fall two weeks before each meeting date. Persons submitting IACUC protocols are required to attend the IACUC meeting to present their protocol and answer questions.
