Outstanding Lecturer Award
The Outstanding Lecturer Award honors a full-time lecturer for excellence in teaching effectiveness and service the CSUB campus community.
John Deal, Ph.D., Lecturer of Economics
After spending ten years teaching at a liberal arts school in Indiana, Dr. John Deal has been a lecturer in the economics department at CSUB since 2016. In addition, he is currently the director of the Agricultural Business program. During his time at CSUB, Dr. Deal has provided service to his department, school, and university through his contributions to curriculum development, assessment, student advising, and faculty governance. He is currently a member of the CSUB Academic Senate. While being a devoted teacher, he continues to undertake scholarly activities through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and research of local/regional interest. Dr. Deal is honored to be the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Lecturer Award.

Promising New Faculty Award
The Promising New Faculty Award was established to recognize exemplary achievements
in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activities, and/or service among all
full-time, tenure-track faculty.
Linh Bui, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Public Health
“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Linh Bui is a health policy and health services researcher, specializing in healthcare delivery reforms and innovative strategies aimed at enhancing health outcomes for vulnerable populations (i.e., low-income women and children, and persons with mental illnesses) and reducing health disparities. Since joining CSUB in Fall 2021, she has published seven peer-reviewed journal articles in high impact journals. In teaching, Dr. Bui is committed to equipping students with both an equity lens and practical skills necessary for real-world Public Health practice. As one of the founding members of the CSUB Public Health Department, Dr. Bui has been instrumental in the development and expansion of the Public Health program.
Dr. Bui is proud and honored to receive the 2024 Promising New Faculty Award.
Faculty Scholarship and Creativity Award
The Faculty Scholarship and Creativity Award was established to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to the principle and practice of research and creative activity. Faculty research and creative activity are critical to providing an educational experience of high quality and to the overall mission of CSUB.
Antje Lauer, Ph.D., Professor of Biology
For over 15 years, Dr. Lauer has worked with her students on a project that is of interest to the community of Bakersfield: Valley Fever. This disease which is caused by a soil-borne fungal pathogen and for which there is no cure, is affecting many residents of Kern County. Education is essential in disease prevention efforts, and Dr. Lauer hopes that her published work and her work in the classroom have made a difference for students and members of the Kern County community. Dr. Lauer’s work with the community has recently led to a new project. This project allows her to use her skills in molecular biology, along with environmental consultants, activists, and students to improve environmental surveys for endangered mammals in Kern County.

Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award
The Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award was established to recognize excellence in teaching. Each year, one distinguished faculty member at CSUB is honored for the contributions made to their students, to their academic disciplines, and to their campus communities.
Anna L. Jacobsen, Ph.D., Professor of Biology
Science students are most prepared for success through direct engagement with the topics, questions, and resources at the leading edge of scientific discovery, as routinely demonstrated in the teaching of Dr. Anna L. Jacobsen, Professor of Biology. Across the undergraduate to graduate levels and for both majors and general education courses, Dr. Jacobsen imbeds up-to-date content, cutting-edge methodologies, and research-grade equipment to provide students with high-impact course-based research experiences. These efforts have created a legacy of successes for her students in terms of academics, career advancement, publications, and grants. A remarkable facilitator of student learning success and long-term flourishing, Dr. Anna L. Jacobsen is the recipient of the 2024 Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award.

Faculty Leadership and Service Award
The Faculty Leadership and Service Award was established to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to the principle and practice of shared governance and service to the community. Faculty leadership is critical to providing an educational experience of high quality and to the overall mission of CSUB.
Jinping Sun, Ph.D., Professor of Public Policy and Administration

Dr. Jinping Sun has served the university, the community, and the profession in various capacities. Her leadership roles include Chair of the Department of Public Policy and Administration, Chair of the School of Business and Public Administration Assessment Review and Curriculum Committee, Chair of the University Program Review Committee, Chair of NASPAA Site Visit Teams, etc. She has also been appointed as a Faculty Leadership Fellow, leading campuswide efforts in improving academic program review at CSUB. She currently serves on the Vision Committee and as Co-Chair of the Grants Allocation Committee of Kern County Women’s and Girls’ Fund.
Dr. Sun is honored to be the recipient of the 2024 Faculty Leadership and Service Award.
