A successful study abroad experience requires careful planning — and this begins well before the application process. Each type of study abroad program — short-term summer, short-term winter, fall and spring semester, academic year-long — all have different financial and academic factors to evaluate before committing to a particular program. We suggest you take the time to complete all of the steps below prior to applying (many are required) so you can make an informed decision about the program you select.
Steps
1. Apply for a passport
Passport application processing time can take up to 12 weeks — sometimes longer depending on State Department backlog. Start this process as early as possible if you don't already have a passport.
2. Renew your passport
Passport renewals can take as long to process as new applications. Start this process as early as possible. You want to make sure that your passport is valid up to six months AFTER you return from your program.
3. Research available programs
We strive you provide as much information as possible in our Programs section. Be sure to read as much as you can about a particular program. Additional resources may also be available on the partner school's website.
4. Meet with Study Abroad office
Every situation is unique — which is why we require students who are seeking to study abroad to meet with the study abroad office prior to submitting an application. We can ensure that you're qualified for the program you're interested in and that it meets your academic needs. We'll also answer any questions you have and provide next steps.
5. Meet with Academic Advisor
While the Study Abroad office can provide general information about a program and how it might affect you academically, it is vitally important that you also meet with your academic advisor to discuss your plans and see how your program of interest fits in with your degree plan.
6. Visit the Financial Aid Office
Each type of program's funding works differently and it's a good idea to involve the CSUB Financial Aid office as early in the process as possible. They can provide a more complete picture of what aid might be available to you and how to defer regular semester aid to short-terms like summer or winter (if desired).
7. Create a budget
After meeting with the CSUB Financial Aid office, you can begin to create a complete budget and start mapping out your financial plan for your trip. You can find more resources for creating a budget in our Budgeting section.
