Runnervation (n.)

[run·ner·va·tion | rə-nər-ˈvā-shən]

Definition:

A student-led movement where Roadrunners invest in each other to expand opportunities and support for years to come.

This Movement Requires Your Voice!

As part of the Runnervation movement, we at CSUB Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) are proposing a student-led referendum that would expand scholarships, increase support for student organizations, provide professional development opportunities, and elevate campus life experiences at CSUB. Students will have the opportunity to vote on this proposal during a Special Election to take place on April 15th and 16th with a ballot sent to your CSUB email.

What is ASI?

Associated Students, Inc. - Students Working for Students
ASI serves as the official voice of the student body, representing student interests at the campus, state, and federal level. ASI advocates for student rights and works to ensure all students are heard in university decision-making. Beyond advocacy, ASI works to ensure equitable programs and resources are available to support all students while maintaining strong partnerships with clubs to help student organizations grow alongside our campus. ASI is committed to advocating for your student rights and helping shape an experience that supports you and your development during your time at CSUB.

Our History
50 years ago, the student body
at CSUB voiced the need for student representation. Students fought for that right by voting to incorporate their student government into “Associated Students” in the Spring of 1976. Today, the student body has voiced their need for expanded resources and support. Just as students came together in 1976, your vote will determine how ASI will serve and support students at CSUB for years to come.

What Does Runnervation Mean For Us?

(1) Student-Centered Scholarships

More scholarships will be given to students, in addition to grocery and gas assistance, that will assist students with everyday costs.

(2) Elevated Student Programs

ASI intends to bring back a major concert to campus with an artist that is selected by students. ASI will also contribute to elevating existing large-scale programs such as the Runner Nights Carnival and Week of Welcome.

(3) Expanded Student Clubs / Organizations Support

This initiative will grant more funds towards clubs and organizations to aid them in continuing to contribute to student life, afford opportunities for academic-related travel, and acquire club-related necessities.

What about our Antelope Valley students?

As our University grows, ASI understands that the needs of our students have also expanded and broadened. This initiative will support both campuses and provide experiences and services to enrich students.

CSUB-AV students are an essential part of our campus community. That's why this initiative will ensure that CSUB-AV students also receive increased funding to support scholarships and student life on their campus.

Current ASI-Student Government Fee: $30 per semester.

Outlined below is ASI’s proposed increase:

Academic Year Fall Spring
2026 - 2027 $ 35.00 $ 40.00
2027 - 2028 $ 45.00 $ 50.00
2028 - 2029 $ 55.00 $ 60.00
2029 - 2030 $ 65.00 $ 70.00
2030 - 2031 $ 75.00 $ 80.00
2031 - 2032 $ 80.00 $ 80.00

By the end of 2031, the ASI-Student Government fee will have increased by a total of $50.00, bringing the fee to total $80.00 a semester. **All components of the student fees are subject to annual inflationary increased, based on the Higher Education Price Index.**

Ballot Information

The purpose of this fee referendum is to students the choice to increase the existing ASI-Student Government Fee for the following purposes:

  • Increase scholarships and aid to students.
  • Increased support to student clubs and organizations.
  • Increased and elevated student events and activities.
  • Investment towards student-led enterprises.

What does a "Yes" vote mean?

Increased scholarships and aid to students

Scholarship amounts will increase to $1,000 next school year, expanding to support up to 150 students by 2031. New additional scholarship opportunities will include conference and professional development support, as well as scholarships to cover the $95 parking permits. Direct aid will also expand through gas and grocery assistance for students experiencing need.

Increased support to Student Clubs and Organizations

Student clubs and organizations will receive more funding and be able to request necessary club-related supplies and expenses with their events.

Increased and elevated student events and activities

Funding will be provided to expand the Runner Nights Carnival, support existing student-focused activities, and bring back the Runner Nights Concert.

Investment towards Student-Led Enterprises

The ASI Board will look into projects to support students such as a demonstration kitchen and other major initiatives.

The impact will be immediate. We want students to feel the benefits of the referendum starting in the Fall Semester of 2026.

What Does a "No" Vote Mean?

No new scholarships and aid for students.
No new scholarships will be given to students and only 60 students will be able to be awarded the $500 ASI Scholarship.

Limited growth for student clubs and organizations.
Clubs will receive no additional funding to support their growth or operational needs and will have to remain focused on fundraising rather than cultivating the campus experience we want to see through projects and programs.

Decrease in student activities.
Due to rising costs, activities and programs may decrease, and less students may be served. Without additional funding, a campus concert would not be financially feasible, and ASI would be unable to bring this event back.

Pros: The fee is part of the cost of attendance and may be covered with your financial aid package.

Cons: Some students may not see their financial aid package cover the cost.

How are we ensuring the impact is immediate while only raising fees $5 a semester if the referendum is successful?

ASI will allocate a portion of its reserves during the phased-in increase to ensure that student support and programs can expand immediately. This will allow for you to see benefits rights away as the increase is gradually implemented, minimizing the financial impact for students.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Runnervation?

Runnervation is a student-led movement where Roadrunners invest in each other to expand opportunities for years to come!

Why are we increasing fees?

Students have been asking for increased scholarships, direct aid for food/gas, and for campus life experiences, and we have listened!

Can I opt out? Can I opt back in?

This would be part of the mandatory Category II fees and there is no opt out option. This is why the decision to raise the fee is in your hands. Make sure to vote.

What benefits can I see right away?

- Scholarship increased to $1000 from the current $500

- Scholarships received increased from 60 students to 150 students

- New gas and grocery assistance

- New Individual Travel Grants for professional development

- Increased programming, including the return of the Runner Nights Concert

How can I apply for scholarships (student aid)/What are the qualifications?

Any fee-paying student is eligible for the award. There are 2 awards cycles: 1 in Fall and 1 in the Spring. Information for the application is sent prior to the start of each semester via email.

How long is this fee increase for?

It will be increased by $5 every semester until Spring of 2031.

How was this initiative thought of? How were students involved in this process?

This was an initiative led by your elected student representatives. A committee was formed in the Fall semester where ASI members and a few students at-large discussed what expanded operations may look like for ASI to meet the need of our growing student population. ASI made sure to include voices not on the ASI board to ensure that this initiative was broad in scope to benefit as many students as possible.

How is this going to impact the AV campus?

An AV student representative was directly involved with the development of this proposal. As such, a portion of the fees raised will go towards sustaining and increasing the support and resources needed on the AV campus.

Who decides where the money is going?

The ASI Board of Directors determines the ASI Budget each year, ensuring there is continued oversight and stewardship by the student representatives elected by the student body.

How can I vote and where/ who can vote?

All enrolled CSUB students (except Extended Ed./Open University students) will receive an email with a link to vote. We will have voting stations on the days of the elections to help you find your ballot and answer your questions.

Can the fee be increased again in the future?

Only through a campus referendum such as this one.

What happens if this does not pass?

The ASI fee will remain the same (will minimally increase via inflation).
