Dr. Igor Calzada, MBA, FeRSA
Dr. Igor Calzada, MBA, FeRSA, is Principal Research Fellow and Reader at WISERD (Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research), SPARK (Social Science Research Park) at Cardiff University in Wales, leading the New Emerging Citizenship Regimes as well as the Wales & Basque Country Cooperation Program. Dr. Calzada was named one of the 100 most influential academics in government by the magazine Apolitical in 2021. In addition, he is a Senior Research Affiliate at the Future of Cities Program and Urban Transformations ESRC at the University of Oxford. He serves as Honorary Senior Advisor for the UN Habitat Program and he is the Scientific Director of the new e-diaspora platform HanHemen (www.hanhemen.eus) led by the Basque Government's Office of External Affairs. He is a Guest Invited Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford, Mondragon University (Global Digital Humanities), and the University of the Basque Country (Basque Diaspora and Paradiplomacy).
His contribution to the Institute for Basque Studies at CSUB draws on new forms of community engagement by using digital tools by involving key stakeholders in Bakersfield, Kern County, California, and beyond, and connecting them with the Basque and Welsh institutions in Europe. His past experience as Director in the Basque Government and worker at Mondragon Co-operative Corporation provides to his Fulbright S-I-R a realistic point of departure bringing together policy and research nexus in the Basque Country, Wales, and California. Dr. Igor Calzada's research intersects digital, urban, and political transformations, particularly researching on digital citizenship, smart cities, digital rights, and data co-operatives. Dr. Calzada's Fulbright teaching, engagement, and research activities will focus on digitalization and entrepreneurship. He hopes his work can contribute to understanding and building entrepreneurial networks between Wales, the Basque Country, and California, and most importantly, bringing positive change in social, institutional, academic, and diasporic communities overall.
He is the author of two recent monographs, Smart City Citizenship (Elsevier 2021) and Emerging Digital Citizenship Regimes: Postpandemic Technopolitical Democracies (Emerald 2022). He has published 57 journal articles, 13 books, 18 book chapters, 27 policy reports, 32 media articles, and more than 155 international keynote conferences.
