Funding Opportunities and Resources
A graduate education is an investment of your time and money—in yourself and your career. For this reason, it is important to know about available funding opportunities and resources here at CSUB to ensure a positive experience and outcome. We provide the following information to help aid you in this process.
Graduate Student Opportunities
CSUB is partnering with Kern Community College District (KCCD) and Bakersfield College (BC) to bring you an opportunity to become a Fellow!
The Faculty Diversification Fellowship provides post-baccalaureate STEM (Non-STEM are eligible) students interested in teaching at a 2-year college with an opportunity to participate in a mentorship collaboration with a BC faculty. In addition, candidates will gain exposure to the community college culture, including best practices for teaching and supporting the diverse group of students enrolled at a rural California Community College.
BC is part of the Aspire Alliance Regional Change (RC), a network of geographically related 2- and 4-year institutions. In this model, institutions work together to share and develop programs and experiences that work towards two primary goals:
- Increase the number and diversity of the pool of graduate students and qualified professionals pursuing a teaching career in STEM at 2-year colleges;
- Expand and strengthen the skills of future, early-career, and current STEM faculty to teach diverse student populations.
Watch the recorded workshop for more information: LINK
The application will open from April 5th until May 1st, 2024.

You are invited to the Pre-Doctoral Program Scholars and Chancellor’s Doctoral Program Fellows about two faculty panels we are sponsoring at San Francisco State. These “Scholars Speak” panels are intended to offer a “virtual mentoring” experience for graduate students, especially underrepresented students seeking advanced degrees who would benefit from insights into the road ahead:
At the Margins and the Center Panel – Friday, April 14, 2023, 12:00–1:30PM
Panelists share some of the struggles and frustrations—as well as, importantly, successes and achievements—they have experienced in their discipline and in the academy that flows from greater inclusion of scholars from historically marginalized populations alongside resistance to the ideas, contributions, perspectives, and identities of those selfsame scholars.

Junior, senior & graduate students who are |
$3000 |
The California Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase the diversity of the pool from which the California State University draws its faculty. It does so by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. A special emphasis is placed on increasing the number of CSU students who enter graduate programs at one of the University of California campuses.
Each of the applicants selected will be designated a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar and will work closely with a CSU faculty sponsor to develop an overall plan which leads ultimately to enrollment in a doctoral program. The plan should be tailored to the specific goals and career objectives of the student.
The program provides:
- Travel funds for the student to visit U.S. doctoral-granting institutions and/or to attend a professional meeting appropriate to the student's development.
- Development funds such as student membership in professional organizations and subscriptions to journals, graduate school application and test fees, GRE preparation, and the cost of minor research materials.
- A summer research experience at a University of California campus or other major research universities, fully funded by the Pre-Doctoral Program, so that the Scholar can participate in doctoral-level research.
General Eligibility and Selection Criteria
- Eligibility is limited to junior, senior and graduate students enrolled in a degree-seeking program at any of the CSU campuses at the time of application. At the time of award, applicants must be matriculated into a degree program and be enrolled in one semester or two quarters during the award year. International students are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants will be selected on the basis of three major criteria: potential for success in completing a doctoral program, probable effectiveness of the student/faculty plan, and level of economic and educational disadvantage.
- Current or previous California Pre-Doctoral Scholars are not eligible to apply.
- Each applicant must have a faculty sponsor who will be available for the duration of the plan specified in the application.
The program is designed for students interested in obtaining research doctorates. Students interested in obtaining professional degrees (law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or an MBA degree) are not eligible.
Note: Students must meet with the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Denver J. Fowler, prior to submitting an application. Only applications that have been reviewed and approved by Dr. Fowler are eligible for submission.
