Faculty Mentor Responsibilities
Faculty Diversification Fellowship Program: Cohort 4
Faculty Mentor Responsibilities:
Faculty mentors are a vital part of the Bakersfield College Faculty Diversification Program. Mentors help fellows develop best practices for teaching at California Community Colleges. Further, mentors are the bridging component that help fellows develop a sense of identity and belonging with the institution.
Faculty Mentors oversee fellow participation in and successful completion of the following:
- Classroom shadowing and consultation of pedagogy, andragogy, and teaching practices
- Bi-weekly 1-hour debrief meetings are highly recommended to ensure that fellows are developing in their role in the community college setting.
- Mentees will complete a total of 2 hours/week shadowing and participating in course activities with their mentor. This can include both lecture and lab.
- Develop, teach, and assess individual lessons
- Faculty Mentors will complete the programmatic fellow evaluation form mid-term and again at the end of the term to provide feedback and recommendations.
- Advise mentee on the development of a professional portfolio and resume
- Faculty fellows will be required to complete a portfolio as part of the EDUC course. Mentors should participate in the process by advising fellows on the utilization of portfolio documents in the application and interview process for full-time faculty positions.
- Attend Flex and other collective-building activities/events
- The cohort colloquium is scheduled for Friday, October 13, 2023. More details will become available during FLEX week.
Compensation will be reviewed for each Cohort and to be determined if accepting the role.
