Overview of Practicum Education
Unlike many other academic programs that students may successfully complete by performing well in the classroom and in the laboratory, social work education requires application of knowledge and skills through practicum. Practicum Education is the portion of the social work curriculum that most directly prepares students for professional practice. MSW students take 20 credit hours of Practicum Classes and apply their knowledge and skills at local agencies for 960 hours during their education.
Placement Process
Many organizations in Kern County and surrounding areas serve as practicum placement agencies. After consultation with each student, the Director of Practicum Education refers the student to a placement agency that offers learning opportunities in accord with the student's needs. After an interview process, the student, agency, and Director of Practicum Education agree on a placement, and the student begins practicum in accord with the academic calendar. Students are not to initiate their own practicum placements without specific permission to do so from the Director of Practicum Education.
Practicum Site Requirements
All MSW students are required to complete practicum as part of the program. Background checks and drug screenings are required for all practicum sites. Additional site-specific requirements may include physical exams, tuberculosis (TB) testing, proof of immunizations, possession of a valid California driver’s license, and access to a personal vehicle. Please note: Not meeting these requirements—including failing background or drug checks—may prevent placement and impact the student's ability to complete the MSW Program.
