Manuela Albuquerque - Albuquerque earned her bachelor's of arts in economics from CSUB and has been the city attorney for Berkeley for 21 years. She is the chief legal adviser to the City Council, Housing Authority, Redevelopment Agency and the City of Berkeley's 35 boards and commissions, as well as to the city manager and staff. In 2005, Albuquerque was selected as the Outstanding Public Lawyer of the Year by the Public Law section of the State Bar and received the award from the chief justice of the California Supreme Court. The same year she received the Minority Bar Coalition's overall award for outstanding service to the legal community.
Albuquerque is one of the founders of Narika, a non-profit California corporation in Berkeley. It operates an information and referral phone line for South Asian women who are victims of domestic violence.
Gregory Bynum - Bynum is President and CEO of Gregory D. Bynum and Associates, Inc., a full service real estate development, management, brokerage, and appraisal/analysis firm he started in 1981. Bynum is a lifetime resident of Bakersfield and a 1972 graduate of CSUB, with a degree in business administration.
Bynum is past chairman of the CSUB Foundation and past chairman for the Cornerstone Campaign, CSUB's and Kern County's largest-ever fundraising campaign. He is a member of the board of directors of the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce and the Bakersfield Association of Realtors where he was president in 2004.
Bynum was selected as CSUB's Outstanding Alumni for the School of Business in 1991 and has been awarded the President's Medal by CSUB and was selected as the Alumni of the Year 2000 at CSUB.
He is also a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, and was selected as Realtor of the Year by the Bakersfield Association of Realtors in 2000.
Joseph Drew - Drew is senior vice president of real estate for Tejon Ranch Co. He joined the company in 2001 from the International Trade & Transportation Center where, as president, he developed and marketed a 700-acre Class A industrial park in Shafter.
In addition, Drew served as the CEO for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and worked for the County of Kern as county administrative officer and director of airports.
Drew is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from Park College and holds a master's degree in public administration from CSUB.
Eric Matlock - Retired Bakersfield Police Chief Matlock served as a police officer from 1970 until his retirement in June of 2004. He enjoyed the opportunity of serving his community in a wide variety of assignments including patrol, traffic, investigations, vice/narcotics, training and administration.
He became police chief in June1999 and led the Bakersfield Police Department for five years. Matlock reached several milestones during his term including the implementation of area command, and decentralizing policing in Bakersfield by opening two satellite offices and the Westside Substation.
Matlock holds a bachelor's degree in public administration from CSUB, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Leadership Bakersfield.
Kevin McCarthy - McCarthy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and took office in January as representative for California's 23nd Congressional District, replacing retired U.S. Rep. Bill Thomas, the former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Prior to his election to Congress, McCarthy served two terms in the California Assembly.
From the late 1990s until 2002, McCarthy served as the district director for Thomas. In 2000, McCarthy was elected as a trustee on the Kern Community College District Board. In 2003, he was unanimously elected Republican Assembly Leader, effective January 2004, becoming the first freshman Assemblymember and the first Kern County legislator to hold the post.
McCarthy is a fourth-generation Kern Countian. He opened his first business, Kevin O's Deli, at age 21 to raise money to go to CSUB, where he earned his bachelor of science in marketing in 1989 and master of business administration in 1994.
