Cyber Security Awareness Month
About
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a global campaign that takes place every October to help educate and spread awareness about cybersecurity. The ITS Information Security team is excited to take advantage of this time to share links to resources, tools, and tips for online safety, invitations to webinars, and communicate with you about various cybersecurity topics.
Ways to Stay Safe Online
Protect Your Data
Protect your data to safeguard sensitive information from unauthorized access, corruption,
or theft.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Enhance your account security by enabling MFA, which adds an extra layer of protection beyond just a password.
Passwords and Password Managers
Create long, random, and unique passwords that include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords.
Phishing
Be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for personal information. Avoid sharing
sensitive information with unknown sources and report phishing attempts immediately.
Recover from Scams
Do not feel ashamed. Contact your bank or credit card to report any fraudulent activity,
change your passwords, and monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual campaign held every October to raise awareness
about the importance of cybersecurity and to encourage individuals and organizations
to take proactive steps to protect themselves online.
Cybersecurity is crucial because it helps protect sensitive information from cyber
threats such as data breaches, phishing attacks, and malware. It ensures the confidentiality,
integrity, and availability of data.
You can participate by educating yourself and others about cybersecurity best practices,
attending events, and sharing information on social media. Organizations can also
host workshops and training sessions to promote cybersecurity awareness.
Common cyber threats include phishing attacks, ransomware, malware, and data breaches.
These threats can compromise personal and organizational data, leading to financial
loss and reputational damage.
Resources are available from organizations such as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure
Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance. They offer toolkits,
webinars, and educational materials to help you stay informed and secure.
