In most cases, the financial aid you receive for your on-campus studies may be applied to study abroad. Additionally, your package may be adjusted to allow for additional costs, such as program costs, airfare, housing costs, and more. This is not true in all cases. We strongly recommend you consult with the Study Abroad office and the CSUB Financial Aid office during the decision-making process to determine exactly what aid you might be eligible for.
Financial Aid Points to Consider
If you are planning to study abroad during the summer, do not assume that your financial aid package will cover the cost or be the same as the main academic year. By default, financial aid will NOT cover summer. This is why you should contact the CSUB Financial Aid office as early in the process as possible to determine your options.
Please also note that there are special procedures and parameters that apply to financial aid for independent study abroad programs. If this is something you're considering, it's best to engage the Study Abroad office and the CSUB Financial Aid office as early as possible.
Even if you do not normally qualify for financial aid, you might still qualify for study abroad financial aid depending on the additional cost of the program and your particular situation.
Finally, we can't stress enough the importance of making an appointment with a Study Abroad advisor and the CSUB Financial Aid office as early in the process as possible. This will help ensure there are no surprises and you're fully financially prepared to study abroad.
